PTH-2 — natural hydrogen changes the equation
FDE confirms 49.6% H₂ at 2,426m at Pontpierre (Moselle). If commercial production at €0.50/kg is achieved by 2028, the history of e-fuel enters a new chapter — one where cost is no longer an obstacle.

Four chemical reactions
that produce e-fuel

Every e-fuel rests on the same logic: combining hydrogen with carbon to form hydrocarbon molecules. Four synthesis reactions cover all existing e-fuels, each producing a different output for a different market.

CO + 2H₂ → CH₂ + H₂O
Fischer-Tropsch (FT)
Produces long-chain hydrocarbons: e-kerosene, e-diesel, e-petrol. Same chemistry as refined petroleum. Invented in 1923. ASTM-certified for aviation.
CO₂ + 3H₂ → CH₃OH + H₂O
Methanol synthesis
Produces e-methanol. Liquid at ambient temperature. Primary maritime e-fuel. Maersk, European Energy. Can be converted to e-petrol via MTG (methanol-to-gasoline) process.
N₂ + 3H₂ → 2NH₃
Haber-Bosch (ammonia)
Produces e-ammonia. No CO₂ capture required. Zero carbon combustion. Maritime and agriculture. 2× FuelEU multiplier until 2033. Yara Eyde in service 2026.
CO₂ + 4H₂ → CH₄ + 2H₂O
Sabatier (e-methane)
Produces e-LNG / e-methane. Uses existing LNG infrastructure. Seasonal renewable electricity storage. CMA CGM, MSC. Lower efficiency (−162°C for liquefaction).

The common variable across all these reactions: the cost of hydrogen. At €3–6/kg (green H₂ from electrolysis), every e-fuel remains more expensive than its fossil equivalent. At €0.50/kg (FDE's target for Lorraine natural hydrogen by 2028), all reach or go below fossil parity.

The next chapter:
natural hydrogen and Lorraine

The history of e-fuel has always run up against the same obstacle: the cost of hydrogen. For a hundred years, the technological response has sought to reduce this cost through more efficient electrolysis, cheaper renewable electricity, higher-performance reactors.

In June 2026, another answer emerged — not technological, but geological. Natural hydrogen, produced continuously by the Earth's crust through serpentinisation, does not need to be manufactured. It exists. It needs to be found, drilled, and transported. FDE confirmed 49.6% concentration at 2,426 metres at Pontpierre (Moselle) — among the highest ever measured globally.

If REGALOR II certification (expected 2027) confirms the deposit and if commercial production at €0.50/kg is achieved by 2028, a century of e-fuel research converges on its economic conclusion: a clean liquid fuel, produced in Europe, compatible with all existing infrastructure, and accessible at fossil fuel prices.

Where e-fuel
is irreplaceable

E-fuel is not competing with electric. It complements it. For city cars on 50km runs, the battery is the best answer. For an Airbus A350 on Paris–Tokyo, a container ship on Rotterdam–Shanghai, or a 40-tonne truck over 2,000km, there is no credible alternative to a high energy-density liquid fuel.

Global aviation consumes ~300 million tonnes of kerosene per year. The energy storage needed for a long-haul A380 would represent, in current Li-ion batteries, a weight of ~80 tonnes — the entirety of the payload capacity. E-kerosene changes nothing about the aircraft. It only changes how the fuel is produced.
